Baltic Sea love: The Baltic Sea shapes life in Kiel and is a central part of our sailing area. Marine conservation and environmental education are important topics at the sailing camp. On this page, we highlight various measures and activities we implement in the areas of environmental education, resource use, technology, and waste reduction.
Marine Conservation City Day
June 8 is World Oceans Day and in Kiel we are celebrating "Marine Conservation City Day". The initiative originated at the Ocean Summit Kiel and is being organized in collaboration with Kiel.Sailing.City, the sailing camp, and other local partners from the fields of marine research, environmental education, and culture.
The program includes, among other things, hands-on activities, cleanups, information booths, and cultural events.

Kiel is committed to the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Waste avoidance
At the sailing camp, we implement various measures to reduce waste and make the most of our materials. During our courses, we collect litter and dispose of it properly.
This is what we do in practice:
- Some of our event and birthday decorations are made from reused materials and are used multiple times.
- Whenever technically and safety-wise feasible, we continue to repair equipment and materials before purchasing replacements.
- We provide most of the information about the sailing camp digitally. In addition, we use a short flyer that can be reused for several years.
Resources & Materials
- For signage and event setups, we primarily use reusable tension straps instead of disposable cable ties.
- Whenever possible, we pass on usable materials and equipment for further use.
- For some events, for example, we’ve made bags out of banners that were no longer needed.
Energy & Technology
- The sailing camp primarily uses LED lighting.
- Smart control systems adjust the lighting based on usage times and lighting conditions.
- The fleet includes three motorboats with electric motors. In addition, three AIRA dinghies are equipped with solar panels and electric inboard motors.
Learn the sea
Environmental and marine conservation topics are part of various courses offered at the sailing camp. In addition, depending on the season, events and activities are held in collaboration with partner organizations.
The sailing camp regularly participates in events related to environmental and marine conservation and supports the “Marine Conservation City Day.”
Exhibitions
We offer artists and organizations the opportunity to present exhibitions on environmentally relevant topics.
Social justice
Children and young people can get a taste of sailing with us, regardless of their gender, ethnic, regional or social background. To this end, we offer discounted and sometimes free offers for financially disadvantaged families.
We participate in the Holiday Pass, Family Pass and Kiel Senior Citizens' Pass. We also accept the Kiel Card.
