Sustainability

Baltic Sea love: Life in Kiel takes place on and in the Baltic Sea and it is absolutely worth protecting! Sustainability and marine conservation are important topics not only in Kiel, the city of marine conservation, but especially in the sailing camp. We take every opportunity to make a valuable contribution and do something good for our environment.

17 Sustainability goals

As an environmentally conscious city by the sea, Kiel is committed to the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs serve as a global reference framework for sustainable development. The aim is to harmonize economy, ecology and social justice.

Winning the German Sustainability Award 2021 in the large cities category confirms that we are on the right track. However, we are aware that we are only at the beginning of this exciting journey towards a truly sustainable city.

Waste avoidance

Einwegmüll verboten

Avoiding waste is one of the most important measures for greater sustainability. We strive to pay attention to this at all stages of our work. We also collect the waste we see during the courses in order to recycle it properly.

This is what we do in practice:

  • At events and in everyday life, we use reusable tableware instead of disposable plastic.
  • Our decorations for events and children's birthday parties are made from reused materials and are intended for repeated use.
  • We repair things instead of throwing them away.
  • We give away discarded materials.
  • We deliberately do without a printed program booklet. All information is available online.

We are also involved in various events on the subject of the environment and sustainability, such as the SUP Clean-Up. Together with the Ocean Summit Kiel, we are co-organizers of the Marine Conservation City Day.
